Trout & Berry Days 2025

Who could ever forget Annie (James) Obray if you ever knew her! She reigned supreme at the Paradise Store; at least, that’s what Conrad remembers! She was Wayne Obray’s dad and John, Bruce, Janie and Kathleen’s grandma! Conrad really didn’t connect her to the two-story red brick mansion kiddy-cornered across the street from the store until years later in life! In the store, she divvied out penny candy over the counter to wee kids, and poured coffee and flipped burgers from the grill to local farmers and ranchers seated on bar stools complaining about current events. Annie was very short and heavy set, but no one ever got anything over on her. She worked long hard hours, good thing all she had to do was cross the street to go home at the end of the day.

Annie’s house was built by her dad and mom in 1902, by the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, it probably wasn’t in too good of shape. At some point John Olson purchased the home and restored it to its grandeur. In December 1993, it was included in the National Register of historic places in Utah.

This is an original oil painting from Wm Conrad Bowen that he painted in his studio on a 24”x18” gesso-coated cotton canvas.

As a kid, Conrad remembers Joseph Barnard White. Conrad’s mother told him many times that his grandfather, Thomas B Norris used to work for Joe White. Joe passed away in 1970. In his day, Joe run bustling farming and aquaculture/trout enterprises. His sons were involved in the businesses. Conrad attended school with a couple of his grandsons Jon and Grant. Eventually, Jon married Vickie and they moved into the homestead house overlooking the farm.

A lot of things have changed since the 70’s, but Jon & Vickie still run the farm and live in the old, but remodeled homestead. Last year, Conrad approached Jon about painting the old barns and sheds. Jon said it would be OK and Conrad finally got around to it this summer. Today, the huge big old barn near the house is in pretty bad shape (you can see blue sky in many places through the roof). When I talked to Jon, he said he considered re-roofing it a few years ago, but then he said “the cost was in 6 figures, and frankly just wasn’t worth it.” So it sits, as it is … for Conrad to paint. Just north of the barn is a fenced enclosure under a tractor trailer where some chickens roam and roost. Milling around the chickens were 2 or 3 free-range bunny rabbits hopping anywhere they wanted to go from the sheds and barn to the house. Bet if Conrad were to ask Vickie about them, chances are, she’d have names for each one of them!

“When we were kids,” Conrad remembers, ”we used to ride past the old DUP house everyday on our bicycles on our way to or from school or the Paradise store.” Not much has changed with the building since then, except the the city purchased the land behind it and built the nice little park with grass and picnic pavilions. The Paradise Sagwich Camp DUP Museum” is located at 8980 S 200 W, Paradise, Utah 84328. The building is owned by the city and leased to the DUP. As Conrad worked on the art for the John P James house, he thought it would be great to add the Old Tithing House to his list of images. The museum houses artifacts related to the early history of Paradise and southern Cache Valley. It’s open on Memorial Day from 10 AM to 5 PM and by appointment. Call 435-245-6737 for more information. For Conrad, it’s never been convenient to see what’s inside the old building. He’s had to be content to enjoy it from the outside!
