"A Vanishing Era" - Bill Bankhead's Barn
17”x11” Full-Color Fine Art Edition Printed on White 80 Lb Paper Cover Stock
This is a reproduction of the original artwork Wm Conrad Bowen painted in a bound 5.25” x 3.5” Tumuarta Watercolor sketchpad he carries regularly in his cargo pants pocket.
Since Conrad painted this image in his sketchbook, Billy’s barn has collapsed entirely into a heap of broken lumber and debris! It doesn’t seem possible that rural barns and sheds … once staple, iconic, and stately structures that dotted the landscape everywhere are vanishing daily right before our very eyes!. The barn on Conrad’s mother’s homestead lot in Paradise still stands and is a case in point. 45 year ago, the barn started to show it’s age. At the time, Conrad’s dad hired Gary Maughn (from Avon and still living!), to shore it up and replace the wood roof with aluminum sheets. Gary installed and cinched up steel cables securing the 6×6 uprights and cross beams in the loft of the barn. The cables and tin roof are a testament to why it’s still standing today. Upon closer inspection, internally, both lofts need to be tore out and replaced and the vertical wood-slats on the south end, exposed to the sun, have rotted away to the point where they are no longer attached to the frame and can’t be. The whole wood exterior should be replaced by aluminum siding to preserve the structure! Unfortunately, no one’s using barns like they used to, and no one can afford to pay for the repairs, updates and maintenance. Thus the demise of Billy’s barn and many local landmarks similar to it … are disappearing never to be seen again!
