Wm. Conrad & Paula L Bowen: Art Show

This stately home sits in the center of Paradise, Utah. It’s been a prominent fixture in the town since 1902. Conrad painted the “John P. & Sarah James’ Home” with watercolors over a pen and ink drawing in his studio on a 21.5”x16” sheet of 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper.

Conrad started the “Dry Creek Crossing at Snow Canyon” watercolor painting about 3:00 pm in the afternoon in a sheltered spot about a third of the way into the park from the south entrance and just above the dry creek bed. The weather was calmer in this location than it was in the morning with big soft white clouds still rolling in from east to west. The under drawing is lite charcoal pencil which he fixes with spray fixative as with other recent watercolor painting he has done.

Conrad rendered the original artwork in his studio on a 23.5” x 13.75” sheet of 140 lb. textured cold pressed watercolor paper with a fine-point permanent Sharpie pen. The Olsen Granary is located in Paradise, Utah near 9200 S 100 E. It is one of four pieces focused on the granary.

“Portrait of A Young Man” is the fourth of four interpretive images Conrad created from a 29.5” x 37.5” oil painting on wood-panel of the same name by Bronzino c, 1550, which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Conrad’s four images came as an assignment from Marion Hyde while studying at Utah State University in the mid-1970s. He was tasked to create four interpretations of an existing piece of art by a historical artist in four different mediums.

Last time Conrad checked, this brown & white pinto pony was pastured with a couple other horses on the west side of the road near 8930 S 100 W, Paradise, Utah. He painted two studio paintings of this pony between March - May 2023.
